🧀 Day Trip: Gouda & Leiden🧀
Hello everyone! Craving some cheese?
On Saturday, October 4th, we’ll explore two of the Netherlands’ most beautiful cities in one day: the cozy cheese town of Gouda and the lively university city of Leiden. Expect historic squares, canals, stained-glass windows, cheese & stroopwafels, and to top it off—a big local street market in Leiden. We’ll enjoy lunch in Gouda and finish the day with an aperitivo by the canals in Leiden 🍷.
🗓️ Plan of the Day
📍 Meeting Point: Amsterdam Central Station at 10:00 AM and hop on a 55-minute train to Gouda—our first adventure of the day.
🏛️ Morning in Gouda
We’ll start in the heart of town at Markt Square, where the fairy-tale Gothic Town Hall sets the scene. Then we’ll step into the stunning Sint-Janskerk, famous for its colorful stained-glass windows. Of course, we can’t leave without a cheese tasting (Gouda’s pride!) and a fresh stroopwafel stop. Afterward, we’ll wander along the canals and soak in the cozy atmosphere of the historic center.
🍴 Lunch in Gouda
We’ll have lunch in one of the terraces at Markt Square, enjoy a laid-back lunch, and watch the city bustle around us.
🚆 Next Stop: Leiden
After lunch, we’ll catch a 30-minute train to Leiden, a lively university town full of charm.
🌿 Afternoon in Leiden
We’ll start with Windmill De Valk—you can step inside if you’d like, or just admire it from outside. Then we’ll stroll along the elegant Rapenburg canal and through the university quarter.
The Saturday market on the Nieuwe Rijn will be in full swing, with flowers, cheeses, and Dutch snacks waiting for us. From there, we’ll keep wandering through canals and hidden streets, taking in Leiden’s weekend vibe.
🍷 Aperitivo in Leiden
We’ll end the day the best way: with a relaxed drink and bites by the canal, chatting as the city winds down around us.
🚆 Return to Amsterdam
Around 7:30 PM, we’ll take the train back to Amsterdam (about 35 minutes), wrapping up a day of good food, pretty canals, and plenty of Dutch charm.
